Harai Goshi

Harai Goshi Instructional

Overview: Harai Goshi, or “sweeping hip throw,” is a fundamental hip technique in Judo that involves using your hip and leg to throw your opponent off balance. It is essential for gripping, positioning, and timing.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Starting Position:

    • Begin in a standard judo stance (shizen tai).

    • Maintain an appropriate distance from your opponent.

  2. Grip:

    • Use a standard grip (right hand on your opponent's lapel, left hand on their sleeve).

    • Ensure your grips are strong yet relaxed to allow for fluid movement.

  3. Off-Balance (Kuzushi):

    • Step into your opponent's space with your leading foot (right foot for a right-handed throw).

    • Pull down on the sleeve grip while pushing up on the lapel, creating a forward and sideways imbalance.

  4. Body Positioning:

    • Pivot your body to face sideways while keeping your knees bent and maintaining a low centre of gravity.

    • Your hips should be positioned slightly above your opponent’s hip for effective leverage.

  5. Execution of the Throw:

    • Sweep your leg (the leg opposite your grip side) horizontally across the opponent's body, aiming to catch their foot or lower leg.

    • As your leg sweeps, rotate your hips to turn your body into the throw, leading with your hip.

  6. Follow Through:

    • Continue to drive your hip into your opponent while keeping your grip tight.

    • Allow your opponent to fall, supporting them downwards safely.

  7. Recovery:

    • After the throw, be ready to either maintain control on the ground or transition into a follow-up technique if necessary.

Tips:

  • Practise the entry and grip variations to improve your effectiveness.

  • Focus on timing and rhythm to improve your execution.

  • Always ensure safety for both you and your partner during the practice.

Conclusion

Mastering Harai Goshi requires practice and attention to detail. Regularly drill the steps with a partner to understand the mechanics fully, and never hesitate to seek guidance from a coach for refinement.
